Hi Alison, I am really enjoying this (and learning from it too ;) ) This week has been Tom Kitchin and how gently he has treated the catering students, he has really gone up in my estimation. Always finding something to praise even when criticising and explaining what was wrong.

There is a catch-up of the whole week on BBC 2 today -this is the one I watched.

Hi Dena,

Yes he was lovely with them, just the right balance between encouraging praise & discipline.

I was surprised the lassie didn't make it through, in the early rounds she was riding high, then totally lost the plot at the finish.

Looking forward to the next two batches :thumbsup

It was the Saturday omnibus that I watched, which I find better. The format has the same annoyingly long location shots, pregnant pauses and handwringing moments that Masterchef has, but otherwise very interesting and it will no doubt be more so when Tom Kitchen's style is contrasted with the other two chefs' each week.

The number of seafood, rather than meat, dishes surprised me. Perhaps shelling/shucking scallops, oysters and prawns together with filleting fish were chosen as the test of things the juniors were unlikely to have come across.
