DEB it is only January 14th - Rome was not built in a year. (or should that be unbuilt?)

Just eat a bit less - especially the naughtier things, drink a little less alcohol and run up and down stairs a bit more.

Most of all don't worry because worry = anxiety= comfort seeking=over eating.

Have a happy and healthy 2013

Hello DEB!

I found it impossible to lose weight on my own, so joined a local Slimming World group. I'm well into retirement and found it difficult to lose weight. My cooking habits were all wrong for a start. I used a mix of butter and oil for cooking, so that's one thing that I've had to change. I use the Spray-Lite, or just half a teaspoon of olive oil or sesame oil. I've lost over a stone in weight and have dropped two clothes sizes. It's also an enjoyable evening out, believe it or not!

I bought a product called Slim Rice from Holland & Barratt this morning. It's made from Water, Moyu (Konjac). It's filling and virtually no calories, because it's made from a vegetable fibre, which all passes through. It looks similar to rice and has no flavour, so chopped chives, or finely sliced salad onions would be a good addition. I sprinkled some Japanese soy sauce on top, too. I think that this product will really help my weight loss.

Hi DEB
Boring as it may sound, I would say

a) eat 3 meals a day

b) don't pick between meals

c) cut down on the alcohol (I hadn't realised how calorific alcohol was!! :o  )

If you find yourself feeling hungry between meals, have a glass of water and go and do some gardening, or sewing or something to occupy yourself - if you are not busy you will think you are hungry when you are actually just bored.

Then you should gradually get down to the weight, size our creator deemed right for you.

As Joan says, Rome wasn't built in a day!

Don't eat anything after 7.30 pm. My husband lost weight by doing this, it stopped him snacking before bedtime.

Cut out the thing that really puts the weight on.
If it's oil/ butter, cut it out of your diet.

If it's cake in the afternoon - do without.

That should kick start the weight loss.

I read about a diet plan in Saturday's Daily Mail, Jennie Murray was writing about it. It's been devised over a period of time by a cancer specialist and dietician. It involves 'fasting' for two consecutive days a week. Well it's not actually fasting but severely restricting carbohydrates for 2 days a week. Then you have healthy mediterranean food the rest of the week. The Mail is publishing the rest of the details in 4 parts next week. Although there is a book you can buy which covers it all. Apparently it helps to lessen your chances of cancer, especially breast cancer, as well as losing weight.

I've recently heard of that diet too Jaybird - a friend of mine and her husband have decided to follow it. I didn't know about the cancer bit though. Very interesting indeed!

I stopped making resolutions a while back, because they were the same ones every year.

I had an excel file which I'd refer to each year, and cross off the old resolutions I'd sorted, and add in new ones. I stopped when I looked back at the 1998 one and found it was pretty much the same as the 2008 one to all intents and purposes!!!

I am fortunate that the biggest one in my list, quitting smoking, I sorted 20 years ago.

I am slightly lying: I did make one half-hearted resolution this year - not to watch that despicable Jeremy Kyle programme, which I seemed to forever end up on when daytime channel hopping. I get the occasional urge to watch him bullying rotten-toothed neanderthals, but have not succumbed so far.

EDIT: Losing weight was always on the list, but I actually haven't put on weight in the last 10 years or so, it's just redistributed more flabbily these days. And I know that all I have to do is STOP EATING SO MUCH and the pounds will fall off!
