Sakks, they did something like that in Reading with a massive complex of stores which included John Lewis. We went there by bus from Berkshire which stopped quite close to the stores. I find these places quite exhausting and prefer to walk around in the open air, rather than through large buildings.

Dennis, what a disaster, but glad that it was quite a simple job to fix, apart from all the water on the floor.

I'd like to say Watford will be bigger and better, but looking at the info online, the new Reading mall is 580,000 sq ft, while the Watford extension is only 400,000 sq ft, however I think the Reading one is a stand-alone new mall.

The existing mall in Watford is 727,000 sq ft, so the total mall area will be 1,307,000 sq ft, bigger than Brent Cross, although it looks like plans are underway to double the size of Brent Cross. Wish I could double the size of my disposable income.

Thanks for the information, Sakks. Although I know Reading station well, which is where I change trains and usually have time to wander around, I have only been to the town once, recently, so didn't get chance to look around. A nice meal at Zizzi's though!

We've changed trains at Reading a few times. The sit down places for drinks/food are outside the ticket barriers. I'm told there's lots outside the station as well, but there's never time to try them.

I always go through the barrier whilst waiting for my train, because I usually have about an hour to kill. I'm usually tempted when I look in the Accessorize shop, have a coffee somewhere and then buy a sandwich from M&S. I feel very much at home there now!

In 1960 M and 6 of his uni frineds climbed onto the roof of Reading station and placed a large green man up there as part of the rag week "celebrations". There was a photograph of the result in the local paper - hilarious.

Can you imagine what the newpapers wi=ould make of such goings on these days?

I worked in readin for 2 years before we went off to teach abroad. We lived in a flat in The Mount. I bet we wouldn't regognise the place now.

What fun, Joan, but rather dangerous, I would have thought. I don't really know Reading, but The Oracle wouldn't have been there way back then.

Taking a wee drive today.
And picking up a second hand swivel chair for my studio. Goes up and down from John Lewis.
On gumtree for £10.

Ten quid! I feel guilty.
I'm taking a twenty, just in case I honestly cannot leave so little for it.

If you've agreed £10 pay £10, you are doing them a favour getting rid of their household clutter. If you think it's a bargain, console yourself with the thought that to throw away such a lovely chair at a giveaway price, its replacement must have cost them an absolute fortune, so they have money to burn.

There will always be the occasion when the opposite happens, you pay a fortune for something which turns out to be pants.

10 squid paid.
Thanks Sakkarin, they were talking about it being the bargain of the century, and I saw your post too. No need whatsoever to pay any more.

It's better than I thought.
It goes backwards too.

It's a lovely chair Gill!

I have a floor protector mat. They are available for hard floors and carpeted floors. I have a carpet in the computer room.

Not seen those before, Renee. What a super idea.

Uschi, I had a piece of tan and white thick material which was just enough - saved my buying another meter of anything else.
Washed the chair - and it's looking fine.

I laid the studio flooring myself too. Very practical.

What's your plumbing like?

I can just see you using that chair like a sit-down skate board when no-one's around :D
