They are probably made on a conveyor belt: Extruder drops dough blobs into oil and are flipped over with a paddle as they swim along and then tumble out to the next moving section to cool before "falling off" into a sugar tray. They showed that on a US tv prog. I've seen similar UK one for making decorated chocolate box chocolates.

There was a "diners" prog recently where they made cheese-stuffed burgers every one by hand and the resto owner said they made/sold 600 a day. The mind boggles.

Having just spent all my spending money on a spiraliser, I think it will have to wait a few weeks till it makes my bucket list...

Years ago, my sister worked at Tesco. They used to make "whole" doughnuts, fill them with apple puree and then stamp the hole out of the middle. These "holes" were available for staff to buy at a very low price. She used to buy them for her cat, who absolutely loved them!

For the cat?? I would have eaten those, Pampy! Sainsbury's were sampling jam doughnuts a while back. I'm sure that they don't make them on the premises, because they had been fried, but they were very fresh.

A duffnut recipe from that renowned Icelandic chef Rachel Allen. Looks like she burnt them though!

"I never got her recipe...". Hmmm.

At first glance I thought they looked a bit like koeksisters from South Africa but actually not so much when I followed up

Here's a probably good recipe for koeksisters for the record, as they are an interesting doughnut variant and not difficult

I used to have these when I lived in Holland. And when we came back to the UK, we had a friend who was married to a Dutch girl and she used to make them for us at New Year.

May give that a try, as my previous "ovened" duffnuts were dreadful...

EDIT: WHoops, my mistake, just went to sort out ingredients and realised they are fried, not ovened...
