Wow, is there anything you can't do with Spam?
Spam was mentioned last night on a radio programme by a caller. The presenter reactively said Ugh! then rapidly said that if Spam was advertised on their radio channel then it was a delicious teatime treat

Re: Spam spam spam......wonderful spam
Hi jeral
I did 3 or 4 years ago on a Sunday and that was Spam fritters. Used adli's baking mix or bisquick if you prefer and diced up a tin of spam. I cheated as I was feeling bit chefy and used a Couple of non stick egg rings to keep them the same size. Would have served them maple syrup, with scrambled eggs as part of brunch. Prolly some ketchup for the wee ones.

Re: Spam spam spam......wonderful spam
We used to have Spam fritters at my prep school (which is 7 years old to 11 or 13 here) but ours were made by cutting the Spam into fairly thick slices and dipping them into batter before deep frying
I loved them
Inspired by reports of a Spam craze in Hong Kong I bought some a couple of years back.
I can confirm I no longer like Spam, either straight from the can, or even fried until it has golden crispy bits

My mum made them once, also corned beef fritters were good. Mostly we ate healthy food though, so we didn't have them again.
Yes, I remember that Spam was nice fried until you got the crispy edges, but I did buy some a couple of years ago and I didn't like it one bit. The texture was too much like mush and you couldn't see the bit of ham in like you used to.

Re: Spam spam spam......wonderful spam
The last time I had Spam was on September 3rd 1999 to commerate the 70th anniversary of the out break of war and, incidentally. my parents diamond wedding. I made Spam fritters among other war-time "treats " and they both enjoyed the nostalgia if not the actual taste
I do like a nice corned beef and tattie pie though or corned beef hash. Just sometimes I can get decent corned beef in our local supermarket and make a pie as a special treat for M.

Is it Hawaii where it's a staple?
Brought up here too on spam fritters.
Think they might make me feel queasy nowadays, but, like sugar sandwiches with bread and marge, I did enjoy them.
Yep, stovies is still delicious today, Joan.

I seem to recall that Spam/potato/onion hash. pan fried in pork fat until crispy, was tasty and popular - maybe it still is as a breakfast or brunch item, and why not considering how bland hash browns tend to be.

Re: Spam spam spam......wonderful spam
Having looked at that recipe again I think it should be in the faffy recipe thread. All those ingredients to tart up a tin of Spam
Re: Spam spam spam......wonderful spam
Ha!
Perilla: I once bought it thinking it was betel leaves, for Vietnamese Bo La Lot. Had no idea what to do with it when I realised it wasn't betel, so it mouldered in the fridge tilll I threw it away. Fortunately I found betel eventually, however the perilla came from Hoo Hing, and I'm pretty sure they've had it every time I've been there. Not sure I've ever seen it elsewhere.
Mind you, Torode's perilla spam fritters looked a bit of a mess...

Aha! I was reading up on Perilla and discovered that it is also known as Shiso, which I am familiar with, although I've never used it. I found this rather interesting-looking website where you can buy the plants:

Yes, that's the thing, I might invest in shiso / perilla plants if I like it, but I'd like to try it first

Friday nights, end of the 1960s.
Choir practise from 6 - 7.30pm
Down to the chippy for Chips, Spam fritters (or pineapple fritters, or a Saveloy) and crackling.
Then off to the local to wash it all down!

Happy memories eh? A mix of Spam and pineapple fritters would be nice! I'll bet you couldn't manage it these days though!
Shiso/perilla is also one of the ingredients in the Japanese seasoning Furikake, which I've used in the past and where I remembered the name from.

Never liked Spam but did like PEK chopped ham & pork. Didn't see it for years until we moved here and our local Costcutters sell it, suspect it would be too salty for me these days.
Now a good corned beef hash or corned beef pasties are food of the Gods.

My Dad liked the Danish Plumrose version, which he always referred to as 'chopped ham and chalk'

The acronym for SPAM is " Shoulder Pork And haM"
Re: Spam spam spam......wonderful spam
Thanks. I didn't know that and if that's what it contains, it must be good!
