Disappointment

Postby Gillthepainter » Mon Jul 24, 2017 2:46 pm

Nothing quite like something that doesn't meet our expectations when it comes to food.

On holiday, I have just the one ice cream.
It's a personal treat, something I really look forward to - and I take my time choosing where to get it.
Particularly nice to do it in Italy - as their ice cream is to die for, of course.

Well, I worked myself up for a Movenpick, at a Movenpick cafe in Spain. I'd been walking passed for days.
Never tried it before but it's gonna be something!
Coffee, glass of water and a vanilla Movenpick please.

Meh!
What a disappointment. Tasted creamy in a carnation cream way.
One diddy scoop in a huge bowl - now that's taking the Mickey.

I wish I'd just gone for an almond Magnum at a shop.

Over to you .......

I limit myself to just one at a time.

Eating, not buying, that is, as Magnums tend to come in 3s or 4s. And the interval may be as short as ten seconds if my willpower is at a low ebb...

Movenpick have gone the way of many such things. DD first introduced us to them in Germany and those who love icecream were impressed.

A few years ago they were on sale here but what a difference, I loved the ice creams and sorbets in Minorca (liked the gin even more  ) and we can, just now and then get something similar in Picard, M's absolute favourites are the half cocnut shells - not for me though.

I think movenpick is OK but not the very best, perhaps Carte d'Or level, and some of the flavours such as rhubarb are good for a change

I am disappointed that iceland no longer do their own fairly small tubs of Cornish Dairy, they sell Kelly's which comes in a huge pack, is very expensive and not quite as nice

Good vanilla ice cream is hard to
Come by, I'm not that fond of Green and Blacks, which people rave about.

Sakkarin, if I bought 4, I'd eat 4 ;)

Movenpick has gone downhill has it. That would explain it.
I had Carte D'or in Corsica at the end of a meal, and was blown away by the product. Lovely.

That's a point about coconut Joan.
I use to like frozen bounties when they first came out.

Sue - too true.
Vanilla is my usual choice, but it's not what it used to be.

Well, the name Movenpick would put me off for a start, if I saw it in Spain, Gill!

Movenpick doesn't float my boat, and as for Haagen Dazs - :vomit it's far too sweet for us Strictlys'. I haven't been a fan of the Mr Whippy type of ice cream for years now. I would far rather pay a little more for a good quality flavoured gelato or locally made one; plus Thorntons or Kellys for that matter.

I am not a great fan of either Nestle, Cadbury's or Galaxy chocolate now. I definitely prefer most supermarket own brands with the exception of Morrisons milk choc. I can now eat the fine chocolate (up to 85% cocoa solids) now too!

I also prefer Asda's versions of the Penguin etc. chocolate biscuits

Now on to the savoury stuff!

We definitely prefer Asda's cream crackers to Jacobs ones, which are incredibly dry by comparison. However, we find the lower fat peanut butter far too sweet for us, so have stuck with the full fat version.

Movenpick is Swiss, they have a restaurant next to the old Berlin office with an ordering system so fiendishly complicated I never risked it, though the salads looked good. Huge Movenpick hotel with ice cream parlour in Petra (Jordan) for some reason, think they get everywhere.

I don't regard Carte d"Or as anything very special, I'll happily eat it, but IMO it's a good supermarket brand, we used to keep it in the freezer so there was always something Dad could have as a quick pud

It just annoys me that it's Nestle, Carte d'Or and Movenpick everywhere now, used to be you got Delta in Greece and Motta in Italy and so on and they were different, now even if they retain the local logo it's all Cornetto and Magnum. Celebrate diversity! :D

My parents went to the Ben and Jerry's factory in New England and were very impressed, but all the flavours in local shops seem to have crumbs in them, yuk. Just checked, they do make plain vanilla, must track some down.

Sue I've never been a fan of B & J.
Their crumbs taste of raw cake. And the ice cream tastes of nothing in particular, well the vanilla doesn't, I always order vanilla.

I was pretty pleased when they left Cineworld for whatever reason.

And I've always had a soft spot for cornettos.
After a long walk last month, Tony had a cider lolly and I a cornetto.
They haven't dabbled, it's like it used to be. They haven't even made them smaller.

It'll be the most expensive ice cream ever, but pop over to Croatia, any back street - wonderful. :limbobanana

The ice creams are cheap - getting there costs a bit.

Mr Q really rates Waitrose Espresso Gelato. I'm not keen on sweet things at all and the only ice cream I eat is pistachio and haven't had a good one for years.

Know exactly where B&J's is in Vermont, on the road up to Stowe and not far away from where the Von Trapp Family moved to. Stowe is gorgeous.

Definition of disappointment :-

Investigating a cod piece & finding a fish finger.........Boom Boom! :D

I haven't had ice cream in centuries - so no help from me - when I was a very young Lush a local ice cream parlour (Italian family) made their own, very creamy & firm - a cornet from there was a real treat - unless of course it was a knicker bocker (sp?) glory :thumbsup

Sitting at a beach café during the hot weather I tried not to watch a grown woman sitting next to me devour a huge revolting whippy type cornet in the most disgusting way - tongue fully extended & twirling the ice cream round & round it- I really felt like heaving!

I know you would never have such terrible manners Grillygirl.......!

Sounds revolting.

If you are dreaming about when I was young Lush, I would be eating ice cream sundaes - choca-blocka-glory. I just made that up.

Dennis & Joan.
Sounds tempting thank you.

As we are still talking ice cream, I went to a Waitrose demo on an Indian menu.
The pudding was homemade mango kulfi - and jolly lovely it was too.

Q, you might have been interested, as the pistachios were rolled on the outside.

I've still got the recipe somewhere if anyone is interested.

I had a small pistachio kulfi as the finale to a small plates lunch at Cinnamon Soho today. Very nice

Hey Sue

Many years, the 90s maybe, been and Jerry's made a chocolate sorbet which I rather liked. Found it quite by accident in one of the local supermarkets. Sad to say, no longer made.

Hey gil please do post that recipe. Sounds interesting. Thanks!

Sounds interesting, Mark.
A sorbet often hits the spot anyway. With chocolate that's got to be good.

Hi Sue.
Good to see it on the menu, it's not always there like in the old days. It was guaranteed usually.

That recipe. Ah, tis on their website

The only awkward thing is getting hold of little plastic glasses/cups that you can cut and peel off when set.
The small ones.

Ben and Jerry's is now owned by Unilever.
I have a B&J's ice cream recipe book (I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker) and I was somewhat underwhelmed by it - I can find much better recipes in other places.
