Re: Disappointment
I think it was the whole ethos of the Ben and Jerry's place my parents liked, fair trade, traceable ingredients, looking after the staff etc. (This must have been 20 years ago) but also the actual ice cream
Haagen Daz do one superb flavour -Dulce de Leche, but can't think of another I specially like

We've done it before, Dennis.
And got the warmest welcome you could imagine.

But you're young, I haven't driven on the Continent for probably thirty years - I hate to say it ( ) but sometimes common sense just has to kick in. OH doesn't drive and hire cars are out of the question.

Re: Disappointment
Going back to ice cream, I had a home made vanilla tub at Forty Hall in Enfield today
Lovely ice cream, could have stood stronger vanilla

Re: Disappointment
You're right Dennis.
We both do the driving, and it takes the strain - Tony into the cities, me the long motorway stretches where you point and go.
Hi Sue.
Forty Hall looks rather lovely.
Shame the ice cream lacked ooomph. I found myself hovering over the Waitrose ice cream freezer yesterday. It's got a massive array.
Gone are the days of the arctic roll then.
That I used to think was amazing.

Re: Disappointment
You also mention Dulce de Leche.
That's got to be good.
I think I'll pass by again on my bike and see if they have it.

Ah Forty Hall, the days of my childhood!
Had a half decent ice cream on Seaton seafront the other day. There's an Italian place on Redcar promenade that had a good reputation.

Notarianni's ice cream parlour at the south end of Blackpool is the very best that I've ever tasted. They have turned down £1,000,000 for the recipe and there are only three people who know it. They only make one flavour, which is vanilla. I used to live there many years ago and it was the occasional treat.

I haven't thought about artic roll for yeeears - the height of sophistication - used to love 'em & also those 'bombs' - battered & deep fried with ice cold ice cream inside - magic!
Do they still make Mivvies (sp?) used to love those too.
Memories.................

Strawberry was good too............
Re: Disappointment
I used to love the Strawberry Mivvies and the Arctic Roll!
Morrisons have Strawberry Splits, which seem similar to the Mivvies.

When I was a teenager, the gourmet dessert I made was artic roll covered in meringue then baked as a kind of cheats Alaska.
As for ice creams individually, you can't beat Magnums, especially the caramel one. The mars bar ice creams are nice too .
I've never been keen on Haagen Dazs. Ben and Jerrys have some great flavours, but I think they're more for if you have a sugar craving than an ice cream craving if that makes sense.
I think Carte D'or is pretty good for the price. The texture is nice and the flavour always comes through well

Re: Disappointment
I think people haven't quite got what I meant
My dislike of Cornetto on holiday (apart from the soggy cone) is not that there is anything wrong with Cornetto, just that having travelled 900 miles to Petra I didn't want an ice cream available in every UK corner shop, I wanted something new
Same with Carte d'Or, if I go all the way to Spain, I want a local speciality, not an originally Belgian brand sold in iceland stores in the UK. Nothing wrong with it, but it lacks originality.
if I'm having an ice cream as a special treat, I don't want a mass produced one at all, I want something that is actually special, made locally
I used to like the Loseley Farm ice creams, but I think they are long gone

Re: Disappointment
I know what you mean Sue re wanting something local. We are lucky where we live, because there is a cafe/gelateria which sells proper Italian gelato which is wonderful. There are a few American style ones as well, judging by the lurid colours on the posters of some of their ice creams. I haven't been in them as yet though. A couple of years back we went to a vintage vehicle and steam rally. There was an ice cream van selling really locally produced ices, which were literally made at a farm about a mile away from where the rally was. My goodness that was amazing ice cream, you could really taste the love that had gone into making it.
Re: Disappointment
I know what you mean, Sue. When I went to Ludlow, I bought some delicious ice cream which was made in nearby Herefordshire.
Amy, I love the Caramel Magnum too and Magnum's are usually on offer for £2 in Asda.
Fredericks ice cream is made locally. The family originally came from Italy. It's a lovely story.

Mrs. Dowson's ice cream is very local to where I live - not too far from you either, Renee. https://www.mrsdowsons.co.uk/ice-cream
Re: Disappointment
I've heard of Mrs Dowson's ice cream, but have never tried it. Yes, I know the A59 really well and the area from previous visits to Whalley and other places.

Re: Disappointment
Aww, my sister is just back from Blackpool.
Too late to point her in the direction of Notarianni's, Renee.
We've got a gelateria down in town. I shall give it a go in the week when I wander over for something.
Caramel magnum! Got it. On my radar for another time.
Let's see if it's better than almond shall we.
