Vaniila vs vanilla

Was browsing thru Facebook and came across this

I love the idea of homemade vanilla. Never ever imitation or essence.

Got me to thinking, flavouring vs vanilla bean paste. Saw JO use it a few times, figured why not. I think there is a bigger hit of vanilla goodness in the paste, the liquid doesn't have, at least to me. What do you lovely people use when it comes to vanilla.

Unrelated note, I found their custard listings. Some interesting flavours.

I would use vanilla paste or a pod after reading that vanilla extract (the real stuff) also contains alcohol.

I couldn't read all those ice cream flavourings, but one that I would like to try is liquorice ice cream. Coffee is a favourite which I used to buy In France and vanilla.

Why is the alcohol a problem? You only use a teaspoon and the alcohol is what moves the flavour from the pod to the food.

You can make home made vanilla extract with vodka

I buy Ndali fair trade vanilla from Uganda, available from Waitrose or online, I bought a friend a bumper pack of the pods as a present, she was happy

I thought I saw a flavour of dark chocolate. Made with duck eggs, how can it be bad. And one for strawberry/rhubarb custard. Growing up was never a fan. Saw it in pies. Way to stringy for me. Dad had a garden for many years and we tried it a couple of years. Grew like weeds. The flavour was nice. But those damn strings.

If I recall the hairy bikers made their own vanilla too with vodka and vanilla beans. I can only imagine how good it was after 6 months.

I've never heard that it was, except perhaps if you have strong objections to imbibing even the smallest amount of alcohol - maybe for religious reasons?

Good morning vanilla fans.

Mark, I made my vanilla vodka some time ago now, and it's still doing good in the cupboard.
I use it, then top it up with more vodka.
My friend gave me some Madagascar pods that went in whole.

Like Renee, I tend to use it in baked goods, as it does have a "vapour" to it & a rawness.
Many recipes have it cooked in a sauce, or with eggs such as custard, or biscotti.

Not for drinking either.

My top ups are just with the cheapest vodka going, but as I'm not a baker I don't buy it much.

In the making, like a lot of fruit infused drinks - you shake the bottle every day for a week, then a few times a week.
Leave it for a 3 months, then you are ready.

I use Vanilla Bean Paste too, the Nielsen Massey stuff, I think it's lovely.
Before I came across that a few years ago I used to use extract.
Never used the vanilla flavouring as it doesn't taste anything like real vanilla to me.

I get plenty of the real stuff given to me. Since I don`t use it very often, it`s kept in an airtight bag in a dark cupboard.When I need some, out comes the pod, split in half, seeds scraped out.
