Rip off of the day

Postby Sakkarin » Sat Aug 19, 2017 12:45 pm

Spotted in Tesco, their "Ingredients" range Palm Sugar. A completely pointless 85g tube of it, £2.79. That's just a few tablespoonsful.

Works out at £32.82 a kilo. It may be more attractively packed than the normal stuff, but it's just SUGAR for heaven's sake.

Any other supermarket products out there that have caught your eye, whose price makes you wince?

The £1.99 "Bibimbap Kit" I mentioned the other day is a contender.

A common one I see is where the label covers, er, nothing. It used to cover the less unctuous parts of whatever whilst now it's WYSIWYG. (What you see is what you get.) Like one finely sliced mushroom fanned out as far it can go ;)

Petronius mentioned this antic a while back; it's now a common complaint in product reviews I've read, i.e. that the packaging oversells the content amount.

Also, more products don't give a weight or size now, being sold by item price if processed in some way, e.g. pies. (That's always been allowed for raw veg and bread rolls, so not sure if I'm becoming paranoid or more things really are being sold on packet size.)

Refill bag.
I sometimes use instant coffee. I know - it's quick at 6am.

Refill bag more expensive than the jar. Tesco again.
They are naughty.

That seems to be is universal

The jar is 200g, the refill 150g, which is probably sensible as you might have trouble getting a full 200g into the jar at home, but they price it as only pennies less than the full jar so it 'feels' right until you spot the weight difference

Having said which, I just looked at the Kenco one I have sometimes, and currently the refill pack is by far the cheapest way of buying it in Tesco

I shouldn't complain, Sue.
I got a large round tub that lasted a very long time for £3 once.
