The ingredients list curry powder (bog standard??) , Not a big deal to get. Would prolly get McCormick brand. The recipe calls for surinamese curry powder. Where can I find this?? I searched Amazon, .com and .co.uk, no luck.

Can any of you wonderful folks help out with this??

Thank you in advance.

Hi Mark.
I'm just about to organise a Curry Festival in Caracas, and I have TWO different curries from the Caribbean; a French version, from Martinique, Guadalupe - which tends towards Sri Lankan spice mixes -
and a Jamaican/Trinidadian version, which tends towards Indian Masala mixtures. Dutch Islands/Colonies include Surinam, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao & St Maarten, but I can't find any distinctive product from there.
Try these sites I've picked and see which one suits you best. https://www.savoryspiceshop.com/caribbean-curry-powder

I wrote a reply and then lost it as kk posted in the interim

The curry recipe actually looks very similar to Guyanese and Trinidadian recipes, which I've eaten many times in London, after all Guyana is next door to Suriname

The use of curry powder + fresh chilli + a fresh herb such as celery leaf is typical of West Indian curries, and the soy is not unusual

If you search amazon.com for Caribbean curry powder or West Indian curry powder you will find several

Alternatively you can use medium Madras (the most "ordinary" of curry powders) or better still 2 parts curry powder + 1 of garam masala

Sue

ThaNk you for the recipe for curry powder. I was just concerned that it might be something that would burn coming out for three days.

Thank you for all the links. Great reading.

I was surprised that there was not a prepackaged curry spice mix for surinamese product......

In my travels I came across this and found it interesting

Mark - I used to be mystified by Thai curries - until I bought a little tin of "Thai Green Curry Paste" in the local Chinese market.
It didn't taste anything like "curry" to me ( brought up on Bhoona, Korma, Madras and Vindaloo!) but it was so hot, I think I'd rather swallow molten lava. It was very aromatic however; lots of herbs and fresh chiles involved.
The Red curries are also incendiary - and once again, not so many spices, but lots of chiles, galangal, garlic, lemongrass, etc.

I had a roast duck curry in Bangkok
The red chillies had been sliced on the bias so they resembled the little shreds of runner bean you get if you use one of those slicing gadgets - but red not green

Was delicious at the time but I regretted it 24 hours later on the long haul flight home :o

In the UK and I think in the US you can buy little tubs of Mae Ploy brand Thai curry paste, they are a good place to start, authentic and hot but not stupid, especially as you usually put both veg and coconut milk in with the meat or fish which tempers it all a bit

Tonight making Burmese curry - turmeric, chilli, garlic, onion, shrimp paste, fish sauce, coconut milk, tomatoes, chicken, lemon grass, no other spices

Quite agree , Sue. Sometimes the "heat" is just insane.
Now Burmese food is really fascinating.
Anyone been to "Mandalay" along the Edgeware Road? Very simple restaurant but a wonderful experience.
