I did try the cling film method once and only once! I got into a mess trying to do it!

I looked in Asda this morning, Gill, but they didn't have those poachers. I was disappointed.

one of the simple gadgets that i've found works really well (to my surprise) is the pineapple corer/slicer. we have eaten far more pineapple since i bought it in lidl or aldi last year.

scullion, that pineapple gadget looks very useful provided it doesn't need Superman strength to use it.

Back on eggs, I read ages ago that the watery bit can be strained off before poaching via cracking gently into a mesh tea strainer (over a tea cup). So, spurred on by this thread, I finally tried it at lunchtime with newly bought eggs and By Golly! it works, instantly. Also the yolk and remaining thick white easily tip out of the strainer (as both are seemingly too viscous even to start to go through).

The Net tells me that apparently there's a scale called the Haugh measure of the amount of water in eggs. It's known that consumers don't like eggs too watery so an "appropriate amount, not too much" is sought.

An egg's freshness or age apparently isn't necessarily the cause as some eggs are laid watery, which is put down to possible causes like older hens (worn out by too many egg-laying seasons), feed composition, humidity level during storage.

Anyway, I fried my resulting egg gently and voila! no frilly bits, so straining is definitely not for those who love the frilly bits ;)

Hang on, Scullion.
You get pineapple chunks in one with that gadget. I have got to have a hunt for that.

Good tip Jeral
Although I'm not sensitive to the wateryness. As I like my eggies only just about opaque.

Clive & Renee.
Shame your trips didn't yield a poacher. It's the best method I've encountered.

I will keep looking out for it in Asda, Gill. I did look online, but no luck.

I've looked on Google Images to find a similar egg poacher, but this one by Oxo has great reviews and the egg sits in the water:

I have one of these, an oil spray (same brand, Fackelman)
I keep it full of sunflower oil, as I reckon it works best with a clear thin oil and there's no point using olive as you don't use enough to flavour anything
It isn't cheap but works better and works out cheaper in the long run than the pre-filled sprays, which usually aren't pure oil anyway
Never mind the calories, so much easier to use than a brush or drizzling I use it for spraying baking trays, a non-stick pan (not everything dry fries successfully) and spraying over veg for roasting etc.
No idea why you'd want to spray vinegar though

I found this YouTube video showing a little boy demonstrating how to use the Oxo egg poacher. He's so sweet and well worth a watch!

I'm guessing the peculiar up-in-the-air tap is to deter kiddies from using it - FAIL!

Er, actually why's there a tap over the sink?

Thanks heavens he didn't have a dozen eggs or we'd have to watch him crossing the kitchen and washing his hands 12 times! Bless.

Tap over the hob? I saw an episode of Kitchen Cousins where they put one of those taps with a pull out hose next to the hob so that the elderly Italian American lady didn't have to walk across the kitchen with a full pasta boiler to put it on the stove; yes she still had to empty it, but as she used the kind with a basket insert, she could wait until it cooled

I've always fancied one of those boiling hot taps.
Very handy.

Hope the egg poacher works nicely for you, Renee.
Looks very neat, although I don't quite get the upside down hourglass look.

Boiling water taps - I wonder if there are statistics around for the amount of people accidentally melting their hands off on those things...

I would not trust myself with one.

Yeah, looks like an accident waiting to happen. I do agree.
