Sprig YOUNG mint (this seems to be the trick) & small tsp sugar muddled, ice, white rum, club soda

I have come to the conclusion that you need club soda for mixed drinks, sparkling mineral water doesn't have enough fizz to carry through

Bottled fizzy water no - but fizz made using our machine (like posh Soda Stream) can be a fizzy as you like!!

Glad you enjoyed the Mojitos Sue. They are working their way up the list!

We picked up a bottle of Kahlua on Saturday for a recipe, so I had a Black Russian last night. It felt very decadent having a cocktail on a "school night" but I did enjoy it. Haven't had one for quite a few years but with a nearly full bottle of Kahlua to use, a few more will be on the cards :thumbsup

On holiday son reminded us all about a Moscow Mule. Unfortunately we can't get ginger beer here - but when we could they were rather good!!

I always enjoy a Moscow Mule with vodka! However I once accidentally poured ginger ale into my gin and ice (instead of tonic) - I decided to just drink it and it wasn't half bad. Maybe I invented the "London Mule".

Gin and ginger ale was the standard before tonic became popular

Hence the song - "All the girls love gin - gin, gin, gin, gin, Ginger!"

Whatever happened to bitter lemon?

You can still buy bottles of bitter lemon in the supermarket but I can't think of the last time I did. No-one in pubs (at least those I occasionally ;) ) frequent ever seems to drink gin/vodka and bitter lemon anymore! Funny how drinks fall out of fashion!

DD loved vodka with Ruschian (spelling?) Is that still around? I remember it tasted a bit like raspberry sherbet.

Last week was Bloody Mary - unfortunately minus the sherry - really hard to find here.

Tomorrow, as the weather is improving every day it will be Mint Juleps or possibly Rum Collins (we found some good amber rum in a specialist shop earlier)

We were driving back from the West Country on Friday so cocktails were enjoyed on Saturday instead. I prepared vodka and cranberry juice on loads of ice, topped up with lemonade. A lovely long drink for a very hot day!

Sounds good Cooksalot.

I have developed quite a liking for pomegranate juice, maybe that would work too. We had Rum Collins in the end and very delicious they were. I made some "conch" fritters to go with them to bring back some Bahamian memories.

I have taken to Pimm's in the heat

But I have acquired some Dubonnet (expensive I thought at £9.60 a bottle) so will try some Dubonnet related cocktails over the Jubilee

I di dhave a little sip and was surprise a bit - I'd forgotten how different it is to red vermouth, less bitter and much richer, almost port like

Hi Sue

Do report back. Dubonnet at £9.60 does seem a bit steep. I wish I could do a comparative tasting with red St Raphaël which is widley available and in my taste memory bank is the nearest to Dubonnet. I must try harder to find the real stuff.

Did you make any cocktails Sue? If so how were they?

We moved cocktail night to Saturday last week and had classic champagne cocktails to celebrate friends new grandaughter.

Well, we had an interesting cocktail on Saturday. OH used his initiative.....not sure I'll let him do that again ;). He was going to make strawberry daiquiris but couldn't find the strawberries so used the rockmelon instead, with some fresh pineapple for good measure. They were....OK but didn't request a second.

I tried a Dubonnet Cocktail or Zaza

Two parts gin to one part Dubonnet, shalken over ice then strained & served with an orange twist

Although that's essentially a Dubonnet martini, I found it a bit overpowering, and will be looking for longer drinks. I might even try the apple juice

You could try a Dubonnet Fizz......juice of half orange, juice of quarter lemon,1teasp. cherry brandy,2 measures Dubonnet. Shake over ice, strain into tumbler and top up with soda water. Lovely on a hot day.

Just had a little slug of Dubonnet on the rocks

i think my problem is that it is very quinine-y and that is what makes it taste so strong

Might prefer with something other than gin - I'll try the fizz, though I don't have cherry brandy at the mo

I'm thinking I like Lillet Rouge better than either Dubonnet or red (Italian)vermouth, but that IS expensive

So I guess you don't like Campari Sue?

My dad used to treat me to Campari and Babycham (remember that?) when I was a student. Incidentally the only place where the bitter bark used to make it grows is on Acklins Island in the Bahamas - right next to "our" isalnd.
