Re: One man's meat
Renee the Diet Specialist works within the Urology Dept in our local hospital.
The stone I captured was analysed and she then gave me a list of foods to steer clear of. She then sentenced me to six month of drinking a min of 3 litres of water a day, I had to pee into a container for 24 hrs once a month and take the urine into the path lab for testing. This reduced the Uric by 10%. They then over two months tested my response to various drugs, Allopurinol was the best and reduced it by a further 50%.
I have never suffered with Gout just Stones.
Go see your Doc and ask to be referred the NHS is marvellous.
Ps on Monday they inserted a camera and grab into my smekkle to remove the tube they inserted, the relief after 27 days of very little sleep was fab. I spent 3 hours mowing the lawns yesterday

What a relief for you!
Unfortunately, I developed a rash when I took Alopurinol, so that was out of the question. I will speak to my doctor again and ask to be referred to a specialist because I want to do all I can to prevent further attacks. I woke up this morning with gout starting in one ankle and the big toe on the other foot. Hopefully, I've nipped it in the bud by taking Indometacin. Both your condition and mine are caused by the body not being able to deal with uric acid efficiently. I know about drinking plenty of water, but need to put a note up in the kitchen as a reminder!
Vitamin C is very helpful, apparently.

Re: One man's meat
Gosh! I've not looked at this thread for a while! Renee - you might have just sorted out a problem for my poor friend's husband, who has awful gout. He's been on one of the low carb diets - I think its the Du Cann Diet - very high protein. He's been on it for ages and lost loads of weight, but I have to say, to see him hobbling about with gout makes him look rather sad, and is making him feel very grumpy! He never ever had gout before this diet!!
I shall advise his wife to give him a large cream tea and chip butties!!

The very worst thing for a gout sufferer is a high protein diet! Dairy foods are good, apparently and tofu is a good protein food to have. I hope that he comes off it straight away.
I'd forgotten all about this thread and my good intentions to drink more water. I do have a fair amount though.

Sakkarin wrote:I first had it maybe 18 months or so ago, but had completely forgotten about it, so it was rather annoying to realise it had come back. For a week or so it was deadly, hobbling around, screaming every now and then, bags of frozen peas, and very uncomfortable nights. Now it's nearly gone, but the joint still hurts, so I wonder if that's arthritis set in for good now. But it's funny how quickly you forget the worst of the pain once it's gone.
Sakkarin, you must see your doc to get an anti-inflammatory drug that you can take it at the first signs of another attack, which will usually nip it in the bud. If you don't do this, the inflammation can cause permanent damage and you don't want that. I take Indometacin.
When I first had gout, I just had one attack and it was ages before I had another one and then they started to become more frequent.
Re: One man's meat
Just spotted this response to my gout comment Renee, it's funny, I'd completely forgotten about that gout attack now it's so far in the past!
