Ear drops!
M has been using prescribed eardrops to soften ear wax (not too much information I hope). Unfortunately he forgot to put the piece of cotton in his ear on the day he was wearing his favourite cashmere sweater and so there is a splodge of the stuff (xyolene according to the label) down the front.
I tried removing it with wool detergent but that hasn't worked. Any suggestions o scientific ones?

Xyolene doen't come with anythig at all on Google in French or English - can you check the spelling? The brand ame would be best
A drop of glycerin rubbed into the (dry) stain before washing often removes odd marks, especiallyoily ones, and is safe for cashmere

Hi Sue
Thought you might be around
Sorry I misread - dodgy eyes and minute print. It is xylène and the brand is Cérulysé.
I did wonder about glycerine but that would mean a trip to town.
Thanks anyway for your time.

Got it
http://www.doctissimo.fr/medicament-CERULYSE.htm
Xylene shouldn't stain - it’s the almond and lavender oil dissolved into it that's the problem (which is why i asked for the brand name, always important with pharmaceuticals to get the whole recipe), so treat as you would a smear of vinaigrette or olive oil, glycerine or proprietary stain remover for vegetable oil.
The problem is probably that xylene has carried the oil into the fibres, it will come out but it might be a gradual process
The other thing that might take it out, is if you have some spot dry cleaner of any kind

Great Sue thanks!!
Yes I do have some spot cleaner, I'll try that on the smaller and less visible stain frist.

You might find this recent article relevant: http://fashion.telegraph.co.uk/news-fea ... hips.html#
The URL noted also has this page: http://www.thelaundress.com/LaundryTips/recipes.asp Also, there is an "Ask the experts" option shown in the lefthand menu which you could try regarding the stain.
If you might be in danger of making it worse or spoiling it generally (speaking from bitter experience), you could as an alternative embroider or applique a motif over the stain (plus matched the other side if in an odd position). Something manly like a crown, boat steering wheel whatever; some haberdashery stores sell such emblems.
Good luck.

Re: Ear drops!
Hi Sue and Jeral
I did it! I simply made a soapy solution with savon de Marseilles - olive oil soap and rubbed it gently in then washed the sweater!!

Yey! Well done The soap sounds like an odd concoction - the many and various properties of olive oil never cease to amaze me.
