Re: Food that looks as disgusting as it sounds!
I definitely won't be visiting, KK!
When I was at a wedding reception in Taipei, we were served a bowl which had something which looked like a mushroom in it. I was about to put it in my mouth when I was told not to eat it. It was a baby toad, which had been specially bred and is supposed to bring the happy couple good luck! The only good thing about the ten courses, was the glass of sake that we had at the beginning of the "feast".

Should have stuffed it into a pepper or something, Renée.

You dodged a bullet there, Renee.
Talking of insects, I love prawns.
But will not eat crayfish, as they look like big insects to me. I cannot get beyond the image.
As a student in the communal kitchens, I saw an Asian student simmering a lung for approx 3hrs in just water.
Standing at the pot, pressing it down into the water - it bobbed up again, pressing it back down.
He lifted it out, sliced it and ate it.

To me they look like little lobsters!!!
Mind you I do think of weeny prawns as sea insects; and cockles, mussels and whelks as sea slugs and sea snails.

We ate these a couple of years ago, in a restaurant in Barcelona.
I almost closed my eyes when I saw them, but they were actually delicious!

Those look rather revolting too! I'm still giggling at the toad in the hole!

I love the idea of real toad in the hole.
I think squat lobsters look mor insect-like than crayfish but they are still yummy.
Ever tried a sea urchin. They are a great delicacy here but M refuses to eat any creature where he sayd, the only thing/s one eats is their gonads. I love them:

That was a very interesting video, Joan! Do you eat them raw?

I think they are always eaten raw Renee
I remember diving for them and eating then completely fresh in Croatia years ago
Quite like them, but no more exciting than most other seafood IMHO

Well, I will stick to most other seafood then, Sue ... especially Lytham shrimps!

If you want to eat a very lively cheese you have to travel to the aptly named Würchwitz (würgen = to gag) in East Germany to eat mite cheese.
They have boxes with rye flour and live mites into which they place little pats of Quark and elderflowers, cover them with the mite mix and then leave it to mature for a few weeks or up to a year in there. The mites nibble on the cheese and their saliva causes a fermentation which flavours the cheese.
As you can see you eat the cheese mites and all.

Things are getting even more disgusting! Is it a popular cheese, Uschi?
Re: Food that looks as disgusting as it sounds!
Nope. And it isn't mass produced. The mites need their wooden boxes to survive.

They have a maggot cheese in Sardinia, casu marzu (rotten cheese) it's technically illegal but apparently not hard to come by

Cazu Marzu has maggots rather than mites, so I'd think there's a much greater risk of some kind of food poisoning, mites are dangerous only to cheeses as far as I know

That is seriously
Re: Food that looks as disgusting as it sounds!
When I lived in Sardinia, I had to sit at the same table as a couple of old chaps who ended nearly every evening meal with casu marzu - did wonders for my diet!
Re: Food that looks as disgusting as it sounds!
I can well imagine, Pampy! Chopsticks are good for dieting too!
