What's everyone eating this week?
Re: What's everyone eating this week?
I'm willing to be persuaded, but I've tried the part-baked ones a few times over the years (basically when they are on offer), and the rolls have never ended up remotely like "baker's" bread
I usually have frozen home-made in the freezer, but I've been lazy recently and not baked for a week or so.
I've got the "reconstituting" down to a tee - switch the oven on at mark 6, one minute in the microwave at 40%, then 6 minutes in the oven (from nearly cold).
Unfortunately occasionally I have a late night snack and forget to turn the oven off, and wake up to an extremely toasty kitchen

A greasy pizza at 2.30am Oh the shame!
Just to make my self feel better. On Sunday I roasted a corn fed, free range chicken on a bed of sliced fennel and leek with some chicken stock in the bottom, when I was resting the chicken I spiked it with white wine and a sizeable glug of cream and a sprinkle of tarragon and served it with the chicken and some roasted cauliflower and carrots.

My sort of sandwich, Sakkarin. Your bread looks goooooood.
Chicken cream and tarragon - what's not to like.
I'm roasting a piece of beef in mustard.
Which I shall cool down and slice. And we shall have beef and mustard sandwiches tonight.
Sliced beef is such a price for 4 thin slivers, I may as well cook my own.
Kebabs are quite healthy in the dodgy scheme of things aren't they?
All that raw trimmings and salad.

Yummy!! The chicken that is and not the greasy pizza! You slept alright after that?
Beautiful rolls, Sakkarin! Do you not put any butter or evoo on your bread?
I can almost smell the beef roasting from here, Gill! What cut do you get?

Topside.
I won't buy a cut if it just says "for roasting".
And marginally prefer topside to silverside.

My mum always used to get topside, Gill.
I made the chicken salad with the Green Goddess dressing again today! It was good enough to have two days running.

I used to post on Recipe Quest, an American food board and someone used to put road-kill recipes on the board!
Alexandria, I'm so pleased that you are enjoying Lisbon! I would love all that fish and the occasional "delights".

Fish fish fish fish fish.
You're in the right place, Alexandria.
My mum would slave over sunday lunch.
All I was interested in was the roast potatoes and gravy (she'd make extra). I used to just have one slice of meat to show willing.

If I mentioned venison this morning, my husband would jump at the chance to have some.
He adores it.

Re: What's everyone eating this week?
That roll looks lovely Sakkers
I cooked a local pork roast on Sunday with HM sage and onion, braised endives, garlic green beans and baby potaoes cooked round the meat.
Yesterday I turned some of the rest of the pork along with the rest of the gravy, stuffing and some apple sauteed in butter into a pie filling and it was really tasty - something my mum used to make.
Ii made a big pan of roasted pumpkin and tomato soupd too which, as it turned out was just as well because we now have an unexpected guest for supper tonight.
He is a friend from Paris who, with his wife, converted a farm building in the hameau as a holiday home. Unfortunately his wife died a few weeks ago. he turned up at the weekend in a dreadful state, unable to even go into the house and was stying in the guest house whose owner is a friend.
They are both coming for supper tonight but I am not looking forward to it and haven't had time to shop. So it is to be pumpkin soup with an escabeche mussel topping. The rest of the prok stir-fried with plums, spring onions and cashew nuts and served on noodles with stir fry veg (thank you Picard!). I have plenty of bananas so its Bahama bananas (flambeed in rum) with pecan and caramel ice cream.
It's just times like this I know why I always have a full freezer, stock cupboard etc and of course there is always plenty of wine

Alexandria: My usual recipe for 4 chunky rolls uses 250g of strong white flour and 75g of strong wholemeal. Sometimes I go for all white, depends how I feel.

Re: What's everyone eating this week?
That's sad, Joan. What rotten luck.
Still, you can take the edge off for one night. It takes a year to learn to live with this sort of thing.
That was the best advice I received. And I counted down those sad weeks.
Twas true.
My freezer is filled with raw things. So whilst handy storage, it doesn't save me anything when it comes to visitors.
I have to add 3hrs to defrost in effect before I start too.
