Re: CHATTERBOX
I've got a number of olive wood platters and boards - of course I have living here.
The first time I bought one I was told to use mild olive oil on it and do this with all my olive wood boards

That's yet another reason to visit Venice!

From time to time I've mentioned my daughter does wild water swimming. Oxford BBC did a feature on the club. Hope you can open the video. Daughter is the one wiggling her bum!

Re: CHATTERBOX
Brrr! My granddad used to go skinny dipping in the sea near Brighton every day in the early morning, back in the 60s. Oddly the place he used to do it is now a nudist beach, although my granddad wasn't a naturist, but very prim and proper. I think the skinny dipping was more of a penance than a pastime, he was an old time fire and brimstone preacher type.

I don't fancy it myself.

Nice to meet your daughter, Dennis! They are all very brave, but seem to be enjoying themselves!

Is this the beginning of the end for O'Liver??
And a bit of nepotism in the mix too it seems...
"...the business was brought under the wing of Paul Hunt, the husband of Oliver’s sister Anna-Marie. Hunt, a former City trader who was fined £60,000 in 1999 for insider trading, had overhauled Oliver’s media and licensing operations after taking charge in 2014."
EDIT: Let's hope the staff are paid the £2.2 million thatthey are owed out of the £150 million O'Liver is quoted as being worth.

Re: CHATTERBOX
I have been put off this stylee of restaurant by Carluccios.
We had one of the worst skimpy, burnt, dire meals out at the local one.
So when I saw Gino D C's restaurant in Liverpool, I gave it a miss.
Jamie O's never got off the ground here - he wouldn't take bookings I believe? Outside the local theatre, he should have done well.
But people simply wouldn't even try to go to it, without a reservation system.
We had a very odd meal at a "french" bistrot in Liverpool. Nice enough, but odd things on the plate.
I had moules to start = about 10 in a small bowl.
And Tony's main beef bourgignon came with dauph potatoes plopped on top of it.
Coupled with dauph potatoes as a side dish, and more boiled potatoes.
My duck leg had hot coleslaw mayo and radish on the side.
The manager said he was Bulgarian ..... do they love their potatoes over there?

It does look good though, Gill! Nice photography!
I rarely go to Liverpool, but have been a couple of times to meet up with a friend.

Re: CHATTERBOX
Sorry to hear that about Carluccios. We had one in Watford, it looked OK, I bought stuff from their deli a couple of times.
It's gone now, replaced with a generic Italian chain restaurant. I think I said that in a previous post...
Was just looking through "Archive.org", they have some fab old books downloadable as pdfs, again I've mentioned it before, as it has the rare Pei Mei Volume 1 as a pdf. This 1913 book I've linked to has pretty much nothing to offer modern cooks, but I laughed at this intriguing recipe, as most of the terrapins I've seen have been about in inch or two across.

Re: CHATTERBOX
That reminds me of a cookery book that I used to have which gave medieval recipes and then an up to date equivalent. Most of the old recipes were completely bizarre - one thing that I remember is a trout recipe in which you were instructed to gut the fish through the gills!

Re: CHATTERBOX
Gutting fish through the gills is not really unusual, often done with small bony fish like herring or sardines, I've done it in the past
The Terrapin recipe reminds me that Elizabeth David quotes a recipe for "Turtle Lady Curzon" - canned turtle soup with curry powder and cream

Re: CHATTERBOX
Yesterday morning made hot crossless buns with 7 year old granddaughter. To ensure she always had something to do I changed the order of the ingredients including fresh yeast without sponging. It wasn't until we'd knocked back I realised I'd forgotten the sugar! Kneaded the sugar back in. They were fine.
Yeast is so forgiving.

Re: CHATTERBOX
What is THAT!!! Is it a biscuit, is it a game, is it a dare .........
Had a conversation with Tony in zee pub.
And we got round to Gino D'A C in Liverpool again. He said seemingly his restaurants are fabulous as he's only opened a few. So we probably missed out on a thing there.
But the problem with Jamie D'A Oliver was, and is.
Family firstly. They hire family with no experience of the right business. I think it's his BIL?
No-one can tell them they are wrong, as they are the BIL. They don't have the right skill set.
Nothing to do with Brexit.
Coupled with chef weary branding.
And in the food/restaurant investment article he read, it was also crap. Like Strada and others of the same ilk.
People would get a better meal buying something from the supermarket. I certainly had that experience with Strada.
Expecting mediocre, but getting worse than that.
His restaurants simply aren't very good.
