Royal recipes series 3
Looks like a 5 part series according to the radio times, Mon thru Fri, 345 - 430pm
Has also made the down load circuit
Re: Royal recipes series 3
I watched it yesterday, Mark and found it very interesting. I hadn't realised that it was on every day, so thanks for that.

Can someone explain to me why Michael Buerk hosts this show?

Re: Royal recipes series 3
He's been there for all three series, I think the idea is that he knows a fair bit about history but naff all about cooking, so he can be the pupil for the experts. And he does good voice over of course. I think someone more hands on might have been better but can't think who

Ah, I see. Thanks Sue.
He doesn't seem to have a way of explaining food when he eats it, other than "mmmmm, that's nice" basic sort of vocab.
I cannot think of another bod who might be better either off the top of my head.

I have to confess I thought it was John Humphreys, whose reason for being host would have been that he has written a foodie book.
Clearly it's Michael Buerke, but JH is my contender in the same ilk, although it would not for me make the programme any more watchable I'm afraid.

Wasn't it John Humphreys who always wanted a sheep or cow farm and when he retired bought one then gave up after a year as it was hopelessly monetarily untenable? (Sorry, can't be bothered looking it up.)
Maybe Jennie Bond as a long term Beeb royal correspondent would be a good "foil"?

Re: Royal recipes series 3
Just accidentally watched 10 minutes of it, and they were making Her Maj's favourite cake, which apparently is Ginger Cake. It reminded me of one of my favourite cake standbys, Levi Roots' Jamaican Ginger Cake recipe, so I dug the recipe out while they were doing it, and it is virtually identical.
Re: Royal recipes series 3
Go Levi! Ginger cake is one of the first things I made as a teen (after chocolate sandwich cake of course) although it was more like a Simnel cake as it had all sorts in it and was delicious, especially when hacked at straight from the oven.
A cake I've never mastered is "Granny Cake", a light cake with sultanas and crystallised sugar on top. Mainly because I don't know what the base cake mix is. But, hey, it wouldn't last 20 seconds once out of the oven.

Ha! John Humphreys. I can see why you'd confuse the 2.
I'd choose Ray Mears.
But then again, I'd choose RM for any programme if I could. I find him very watchable.
He can probably cook a ginger cake too, he's got cooking skills.

Re: Royal recipes series 3
But wouldn't his version of ginger cake involve a handful of foraged plants and insects, being cooked by burying in a pit of hot coals for 4 hours?

I just wonder if they´re going to serve Buffalo Wings.
And then have Lady Thorbenberry - Gustatz -Herzenboogle painstakingly asking the Chef how many flying buffalo are in Her Majesty´s grounds

Or prairie oysters or Bombay Duck "from the lakes in the royal grounds"?

But I have learnt the difference between brilliant cut diamonds and cushion cut diamonds
I would have liked to see the full list of canapés at Charles & Camilla's wedding, not just the Egg & Cress sandwiches

Re: Royal recipes series 3
It said on TV that the royal occasion would be a week's worth of entertaining dignitaries so how much we'll get to know is debatable and probably only odd snippets of the royal "breakfast" as you suspect.
The family might well be longing for pie and mash or egg and chips by the end of it though
